On past social media, I’ve also been targeted by death threats, although of a different type: religiously motivated, and I have received 3 death threats on account of my religion, all from the Islamic community. This was mainly when I was interacting online topics that affected people from Pakistan, where they are used to being the dominant religion.

Further, I have also received online bullying from those who claimed they were ‘open-minded feminists’. (I do not take this as indicative of hypocrisy of the whole group, only as an illustration that all groups have bad apples.) When the “#metoo” event was trending, I tried to share my experiences of being a male who was once raped by a woman, and was very quickly harassed online for trying to speak up in, ironically, a movement about speaking up.

The thing I have learned is, harassment isn’t a black/white thing. It’s not a male/female thing. It’s not even a christian/muslim thing. It’s a ‘someone in a dominant position who’s hurting”/”someone in a non-dominant position victim” thing. And wherever that dynamic exists, so to, will harassment become a problem.
